I’m not a huge fan of sugar. Especially how too much sugar makes me feel: GROSS. But I do enjoy an alcoholic beverage here and there and since alcohol usually needs a little sweetness I try to find it as naturally as I can. Enter citrus: grapefruit, lemon, lime, orange, blood orange.
Yes some can be a bit tart, but they are the perfect companion for some vodka, ice and soda water. Like sugar? Add some simple syrup. Super easy to make, unless you forget about it. DON’T forget. Please. I don’t think pans can come back from this.
Yet another reason why I skimp on the sugar. I knew I smelt something carmely… and then too carmely… and then I remembered.
Oh well. Life’s too short to worry about ruined pans. Life goes on. <– Loved that show!
On another note, if you don’t like the alcohol part of this drink, I encourage you to try it with the simple syrup in its place. Just use citrus, simple syrup and club soda/sparkling water (what is the difference?) and you’ll have a refreshing summer drink for all ages!

Crisp Citrus Cooler
makes 1 serving
1/4 grapefruit, juiced
1/2 lime or lemon, juiced
1 1/2 oz. vodka
1/2-1 oz. simple syrup
makes enough for about 4-6 drinks
1/2 c. sugar or honey (I used raw sugar from Trader Joes)
1/2 c. water
For the simple syrup, heat the sugar and water over med-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves. Watch this. It shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes. To cool quickly I just put in the freezer for a few minutes.
For the drink, first juice the citrus. Don’t drag out the juicer (though that would be nice and yield more, totally not the piece of machinery to operate under the influence.) A fork works well, great, spectacular even, better than those wooden juicers. To the juice add the vodka, ice and simple syrup (optional). Top it off with club soda.
I haven’t tried this with rum but I am thinking gin might work as a nice substitute.
